Description:
The SUU PREP & Youth Engineering Academy (YEA) Teaching position supports two of SUU’s premier summer STEM outreach programs. This combined role provides academically rigorous instruction for middle school students through SUU PREP as well as engaging STEM experiences for K–12 students through YEA. Teachers will be scheduled to work between June 1 and July 23, 2026. This includes training, camp, and post-camp clean-up.
Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum
* Deliver high-quality instruction using pre-developed PREP and YEA curricula for assigned age groups and subjects
Work with fellow teachers to coordinate lesson plans and instructional activities
Adapt lessons to accommodate diverse learning styles and student needs
Support students during hands-on activities, team projects, and problem-solving challenges
Evaluate student work and determine grades (PREP only)
Classroom Environment & Student Support
* Foster an inclusive, fun, and engaging environment where all students feel welcome and capable of success in STEM
Ensure safety, engagement, and positive behavior management throughout all activities
Maintain a tidy, welcoming, and supportive classroom environment
Prepare, set up, and clean up instructional materials, equipment, and classroom spaces daily
Manage classroom technology, tools, and equipment (e.g., robotics kits, laptops, engineering tools, Makerspace devices)
* Serve as a professional, enthusiastic role model for all students
Supervision & Safety
* Supervise students during check-in, transitions, class activities, lunch, check-out, and special events
Escort and supervise students during field trips and outdoor activities
Report safety, behavioral, or facility concerns promptly to program leadership
Document attendance, incidents, and other required records accurately and in a timely manner
Maintain confidentiality and follow all SUU policies, safety guidelines, and program expectations
Communication & Collaboration
* Communicate clearly and professionally with students and staff
Participate actively in end-of-session showcases and celebrations
Actively support the programs’ goals of increasing access to STEM education for all students
Training & Meetings
* Staff orientation, risk management, and curriculum training (one week prior to camp).
Friday afternoon staff meetings during camp.
Post-camp review and cleanup.
Program Operations
* Assist with general camp operations, including setup, teardown, and daily logistics as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with fellow instructors and program leadership
- Ability to create an inclusive, supportive, and culturally responsive learning environment
- Ability to manage hands-on, project-based, or technology-rich learning environments
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adjust quickly in fast-paced or changing situations
- Reliability, punctuality, and strong organizational skills
- Ability to follow and enforce safety procedures, risk management policies, and behavioral expectations
- Comfortable supervising students during transitions, outdoor activities, and field trips
- Willingness to learn new technologies, curricula, and instructional strategies
- Positive attitude, flexibility, and a willingness to step in and support team needs as they arise
- CPR/First Aid certification (preferred)
- Experience working with K–12 students in camps, classrooms, tutoring, mentoring, or extracurricular settings (preferred)
